JESSICA RIENSTRA FOR WHATCOM COUNTY COUNCIL

Why I'm Running

I'm not a career politician. I'm someone who's lived through the challenges many of us in District 3 are facing: rising costs, rural isolation, healthcare gaps, and wanting to ensure our voices are heard in county decisions that affect our daily lives.

The 2021 Nooksack flood was a turning point for me. As my neighbors and I bailed out homes, moved animals, and cleaned up wreckage for weeks, I saw both devastation and remarkable community strength. There was no time to wait for outside help — we relied on each other. That experience showed me what real leadership looks like: being present when it matters most and working to build systems that help prevent such suffering in the first place.

I believe District 3 deserves leadership that prioritizes service over status. I know this district. I know what matters to the people here. And I know we can make better choices that reflect our shared values.

What connects all of my work is a commitment to building systems that effectively connect people with the services they need—with dignity, respect, and care. Whether it's healthcare, housing, or emergency preparedness, we need leadership that listens to diverse perspectives, shows up consistently, and focuses on getting results.
